Black Clouds and Underdogs: The Blog

4/28/2017

Picture
It’s been a pretty good week for underdogs—an archetype we perhaps know all too well.

Just yesterday Pete Wentz of our most favored Boys of Fall (see also: Fall Out Boy) debuted not only the alt-rock band’s first introductory single in more than two years, “Young and Menace,” but also announced their new album “M A N I A” dropping this September with a tour kick-off come October to shortly follow.

So as if our little emo hearts weren’t aflutter enough while reaching the tip of excitement’s iceberg in knowing big news was coming after the group launched cryptic per ushe teases via social media and movie screens throughout Chicago last Friday, additional glee fell in the fact Pete did this heroic deed on Los Angeles’ own The Woody Show.

Deeming it his “morning show of choice,” Pete, it turns out, is #ALLIN when it comes to his taste in A.M. entertainment. Housed on LA-based alternative station ALT 98.7, The Woody Show has become a morning staple in drive-time programming to say the least since their (re) debut in April of 2014. As the perfect balance of hilarity, irreverence and relateability like no other, host Woody and his comedic cohorts  Ravey, Greg Gory, Menace and Seabas have already forged their way to the #1 spot in “most listened” among all of LA’s morning radio shows.

What few may realize, however, is the perfection behind this pairing, and not to mention how far back some of The Woody Show crew actually go with Pete and the rest of the band!

Original east coasters themselves, Woody and Ravey have been friends and co-workers for decades. In the olden days of the early 2000s while working at a radio station in Chicago, the duo grew familiar with a few up-and-coming bands thanks to a segment they used to do that highlighted local music. The rest is pretty easy to piece together, as it turns out Fall Out Boy in its precious infancy was one of those very groups who you could say have come a fairly long way since then.

But while chatting it up ahead of the single’s big drop, the cast of misfit characters (Pete lovingly included) went into discussing just how far Fall Out Boy really has come, especially in eyes of those who told them they never would.

Pete talked about how big dogs at their record label judged the musical directions in which they started to drift following the huge commercial success of their sophomore album “From Under the Cork Tree.” Upon sampling singles from their next album “Infinity on High” (you know, just another Platinum-selling coaster) they got congratulated for reaching “the end of their radio career.” He went on to explain how “freeing” that moment really was, as the now-emboldened quartet forever chose a path of authenticity with their music instead of pandering to the mainstream, and furthermore—cookie cutter execs.

A sentiment that couldn’t hit closer to home with The Woody Show as well.

Picture
It's amazing what 16 years can do -- via Instagram and Buzzfeed
Debuting on ALT 98.7 was actually a reunion for The Woody Show team after initially starting their morning show at a station in San Francisco in 2006. They frequently mention how ‘risky’ station execs felt spending the premium slot on their ballsy banter, unconventional looks, adversity to play the same five chart-topping songs on repeat and filling of time with segments potentially too “out there” like the “Redneck News” or “Craigslist Freak of the Week.” But having clawed their way to the top (and retaining the eccentric perch while diving into cross-country syndication at that), the group takes their hesitant judgements in stride as well as immense pride in being LA’s radio ambassadors for the ultimate island of endearingly misfit toys.

So here’s to those who, against perceptive odds, rise to the top through being nothing short of unapologetically themselves. They always say the best revenge is living well, and there’s much to say for proving wrong the empty elites and bogus admin who think you’re too dumb or bizarre to be successful.

While we don’t have to wear as much pink as Elle Woods when Warner told her she wasn’t smart enough for law school or be as painstakingly Millennial as Sophia as portrayed in Netflix’s new series Girl Boss (which also premiered this past week), we probably all have our own Miranda Priestly’s to deal with on the daily who are always ready to make snap judgements and disapprove the height of your choice heel.

Carving your way in this world often requires defying the laws of comfort, so succeed in spite of those who didn’t believe in you or take you seriously, and relish the ones that always will.

The Month's Motif & What a Long Way We’ve Come…Thank GOD

4/12/2017

Amidst the month’s frenziful vibes, we’re currently thriving in April’s theme of I N T E N S I T Y .

Week after week of our relatively same routines, we’re approaching the summer’s soiree of change and heightened perspective. With five (that’s right…FIVE) planets officially in retrograde, how can anyone not expect a little turbulence along the way? But all that said, it’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Sure, we’re in prime breeding grounds for feelings of unease to fester and creep while trying to figure out what’s in store for us this next season; however, this is also the perfect time to remember how far we really have luckily come!

“There’s melody in everything, I’m trying to find the harmony,” as a couple of hardcore kids from Michigan once said (edit: screamed). In order to know what you want or who you are, you also have to know what you don’t want…or who you are NOT. Although we may go through phases that in retrospect seem so far off kilter it’s not even funny, we can at least look back on them at later points in life that feel more true and laugh.

To additionally quote every US Weekly magazine tucked behind decade-old Soap Opera Digests and tragically rejected produce at checkout stands across the country: “Stars—they’re just like us!” So here are a few of our house favorites to prove that point exactly…
Picture
Chris Hardwick
via Espresso Gossip & AMC
Always the first to pride himself on being “one of the geeks,” Chris Hardwick has to be one of the most endearing media moguls on the scene today. While the long-time host, comedian and founder/CEO of his Nerdist empire has made an incredible name for himself since his entertainment inauguration as a spry young DJ at LA-based radio station KROQ, it’s been a long time in the making.

From hosting television shows like MTV’s Singled Out in the ‘90s to his current trifecta of AMC’s Talking Dead/Saul, Comedy Central’s @Midnight and NBC’s The Wall (with even more on the way), Hardwick has also produced podcasts, fashioned his own stand-up comedy, wrote a self-help book, appeared in countless other TV shows as well as movies throughout the years, and even originated the role of the nuclear jerk heartthrob Stacee Jaxx in Los Angeles’ debut run of Broadway musical Rock of Ages! No doubt rocking the snake print and skin-tight leather pants while at it.

But an additionally pivotal part of Hardwick’s professional journey has been his past struggle with alcohol. A quick Google search of his appearance circa the ‘90s and early 2000s alone reveals just how different “emo Chris” looked, but he’s the first to tell you how big of an impact kicking the drinking bucket and getting onto a better diet track made on turning his life around. Nowadays using it as a base to inspire others in his signature down-to-earth style, he’s never looked, sounded and of course hosted better!

Audrey Kitching
via Rebel Circus & Instagram
From scene queen to ethereal dream, Audrey Kitching has always been one to take the alternative fashion scene by storm. Gracing the search engines of every unrelenting 12 to 18 year old  from the mid-2000s to about 2010 obsessed with bright colors, big hair, loud music and obnoxiously fake MySpace names, she was definitely the era's ultimate icon.

Between interviewing pop-punk bands for her Buzznet blog, modeling for the Hot Topic brand Skelanimals  and hanging out with fellow scenesters like Hanna Beth and her once-“Trashy Life” partner in crime Zui Suicide, Kitching quickly made a public name for herself. But as the emo/scene trend of the time faded away as we started graduating, growing up and realizing we had to move on because our new social media platform Facebook wouldn’t let us extensively code flashing layouts with RAWR scribbled all over them (luckily it was more so of the first two), she was the token former “scene queen” who rose above that image and has reinvented herself in an incredibly authentic way.

Shifting her career to better align with her more genuine interests of fashion, art and the metaphysical, the alternative icon has spent the last couple of years independently blogging, modeling, designing and launching several lines of her own lifestyle products. From creating her own clothing line Tokyo Lux a few years ago to guest designing and styling for so many other alt-funk-fashion brands like DTLA-based Valley City, she frequently appears in indie mags/websites around the globe and is always posting utterly breathtaking photos on Instagram showcasing her unbelievably unique style. Like many of us, she has also grown more  in tune with her cosmic side along the way. This lead to the birth of her “soul project” Crystal Cactus, which features personally crafted and curated products like jewelry, candles, essential oil blends, divination tools and other home/beauty items inspired by love, magic, fantasy and the otherwise glamorous spirit.

Kelly Osbourne
via Radar Online & Livingly
But if there’s one person who knows a thing or two about “reinvention,” it would have to be princess of one of the world’s greatest gothic dynasties—Kelly Osbourne.

Last year we praised her in a very similar fashion, highlighting the seriously stunning transformation this misfit maven has pulled off throughout her life in pop-culture’s spotlight. Despite falling into a toxic routine of drugs and partying at a crazy young age, and not to mention literally growing up on camera as a teen reality television star on MTV’s The Osbourne’s (sorry Kendall & Kylie, y'all were far from the first), the once-notoriously deemed ‘lost soul’ has beautifully bloomed a 180-degree turn all her own.

In addition to five infamous years co-hosting E!’s Fashion Police, she has also been a judge on Lifetime’s Project Runway: Junior, Australia’s Got Talent and countless other guest gigs around the world. Further proving performance runs through her blood, she’s done other animated voice-over work, came in third place on season 9 of Dancing with the Stars and even served as a field correspondent/guest voice of reason on The Dr. Phil Show in 2010.

Overcoming a history of drug addiction and lethal public attention, Osbourne has fabulously refined her reign as a fellow alt-fashion sage and honed similarly inspiring messages related to positive body image, overcoming life’s darkest times and embracing overall who you truly are.
So here’s to surfing the momentary uncertainty in order to emerge the riptide of bigger and brighter things ahead. If this incredible crew can do it, anyone can. So when it doubt, just remember things really do get better.

Chris Hardwick said so.

October’s Arrival: A Seductive Season of Harvesting Potential Along With Mystery

10/1/2016

Too much doing, not enough being—a revisited theme for this glorious October upon us once more.

As summer winds down and fall heats up, we’re left basking in the glow of where the past year’s work has finally led. While trials and tribulations can be quick to mentally bind us, it’s always key to step back and remember all things culminating to this precious point of present.

Mystic Mamma reminds us October is the month of ~balance~

Times naturally get tough, whether to do with work, family or otherwise social circumstance, yet it always boils down to not letting divisive points of “doing” overpower your authentic “being.”  Inherent ability, talent and sense can be the greatest distinguishers from the clouded air of that which surrounds you, so don’t think shallow slip-ups in the menial day-to-day are the end-all showcase of who you really are.

In heats of the moment tensions get high, but not letting energies nor behavior of others tarnish your ultimate attitude says a lot. Allowing lessons in personality as well as process comprise stepping stones along the path forward is often the most pivotal take-away regarding a phase’s greater purpose.

There’s a reason you wanted to be here in the first place; don’t let it get swept under the rage-fed rug.

As per ushe, intuition remains our greatest guide, so stay out of your own way and don’t let others unjustly get in it either. You are who and where you are for a reason; don’t let anyone or -thing phase you differently.

With Mercury out of retrograde (PRAISE!) and wonderfully witchy weather on the horizon, let’s harvest the dream seeds and live up to our greatest potential.

Happy October, my spooky party people!

Side Notes for the Soul: The Secret to Healthy Eating is No Secret At All...Literally

5/19/2016

In a world of you-name-it intolerances, #fitmom fanatics and health hack-laden click bait ’til the grass-fed cows come home, it seems everyone’s starving for a solution to well-er being. With dietary “risks” running rampant and restrictions embraced like never before, it’s an honest wonder how our eating culture has become so curiously complex yet dangerously complicated.

As an enthusiastic explorer of various food philosophies, let me preface—I’m all for nutritional education and experimentation. It’s an endlessly interesting realm of information providing wealths of food for thought as inevitable as use of said cliche at some point within this post. I personally think there’s a lot to be said for plant-based diets and focus on real, whole foods; however, a critical deep end has emerged in recent years begging to question what "healthy" really means, and even more...what it has become.

A few months back Broadly published a great article highlighting orthorexia—the ironically unhealthy obsession with eating only “healthy” food. Profiling the low-key debilitation on such a concerning rise, the piece perfectly pegs a mounting disorder in newfound form.
Picture
Food virtue becoming the vice: a slippery slope of culinary constraint
Anorexia, bulimia, binging, oh my! Everyone knows the eating afflictions traditionally plaguing society's scope. While these DSM-recognized disorders may be more common than most ever want to admit, is orthorexia is becoming a camouflaged crisis more prevalent than them all?

Extensive restriction contrasts dangerous loss of control as collective ends of the ED spectrum, but at the heart of every point is internal struggle against pressure once self-imposed now equipped with a life of its own. If overwhelming desire to eat only what fits a conceived "healthy" standard begins feeding one's fear more than their body itself, the conceptual parallels are pretty striking.

“Comfortably Numb: Eat the Pain Away” is another exquisite echo a la our cosmic cohorts at The Numinous. Further addressing the perverted prioritization of sparing life's delicious pleasantries for the sake of twisted "perfection," author Kate Atkinson calls out this trap of self-destruction some overly compulsive souls are progressively plunging into. And at times sketchiest of all—without even realizing it!
Picture
No, the occasional juice cleanse won't set everyone on a downward spiral out of psychological control, but it's important to acknowledge the perilous path to which certain personalities are prone. Many forget the primary function of food is energy, so of course it's important to make the most of it; we are what we eat to a reasonable extent, but it’s not what we eat that should define us.

Whether a means of delicious nourishment, natural way to repair the body, expression of love or a creative statement itself, there's no universal meaning of food, nor a supposedly  token antidote for how to most "healthfully" consume it.

That said, why stress?

When you compare you despair, so craft what eating regimen works best for your unique conditions, lifestyle and tastes most of all. We always hear “moderation is key,” so let’s live up to that and kick pursuits of impossible perfection to the punk-ass curb.

For all the things in life we can’t control, why let one glorious aspect that we actually can get the best of us?
Love your self
Love your body

And all you choose to put in it

Consciously or not, it does no justice seeking safety in the shadows; instead strive for finding comfort in the chaos of cosmic realities coming to light.

Full Moon in Virgo Salutes 'No Day But Today’ & Other Luminous Lessons

2/21/2016

Snow moon: Glow moon—Monday marks the monthly cycle once more.

Entering our lovely full moon in Virgo, I think it goes without saying emotions have been on the rise. With Mercury finally out of retrograde as of February’s calendarial beginning (can I get an amen?) and Valentine’s Day a few weeks later, one can say it’s been a rather touchy time...for better and worse alike.

Momentum is gaining as significant airs of shift are upon us. While every full moon entails shedding existential layers no longer useful in order to kickstart vibration-raising flow into the future, this one encourages special light to be shed on the stepping stone sequence itself.

How did I get where I am? Where am I going? Yes, but more importantly--How do I go about getting there?
Full Moon in Virgo - original by April Rose
(Image adapted from original by April Rose)
Perspective may be everything, but it’s acquired over time. While certain situations may extend for weeks, months and even years, the capacity with which you’re equipped to deal remains far from the same. If you confidently know what’s required to ascend the next steps forward, perhaps it’s time to overcome the sometimes menial in hindsight obstacles blocking your way.

Entities only have power if you continue to feed them. A problem can become more habit than actual hindrance, so take some time to face the mental music and reevaluate whether once-debilitations are now anything more than chronically thorny facades.

Growing is knowing—an inseparable pair. Understand the power of presence, and embrace new experiences along with the radically fulfilling change that can come from them.

As a pack of struggling artists braving the Bohemian streets of early-‘90s Manhattan live on to say: no day but today.

Always know today can be your
day to prevail.

Valentine’s Day the Underdog Way: Will the Real Power Couples Please Stand Up?

2/10/2016

Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is fast approaching.

It’s the annual affair of pop culturally professing adoration for one another and disgustingly adorable heart-shaped incarnations of all our favorite foods. Whether your significant other, best friends or trusty four-legged companion, the question is—are you ready to shower them with love?

When it comes to the notion of celebrity “power couples,” everyone knows the so-called modern standards: Kimye…Bragelina...Jay-Z & Beyonce (despite their somewhat-odd lack of an obnoxiously combined name). But in honor of the V-Day occasion less than a week away, let’s take a moment to ‘share the love’ with a few fabulous pairs just as strong of forces to be reckoned with.
Picture
Shannon Tweed & Gene Simmons
After fatefully meeting at a Playboy party more than 30 years ago, the Kiss rocker and former Playmate star have beaten all odds to say the least. With a fire-proof bond that’s withstood the decades’ test of world-wide touring, a hit reality show, countless entrepreneurial endeavors and life lived generally in the spotlight, Shannon & Gene clearly have something special.

Not ever ones for following convention’s course, the couple additionally proved it’s never too late to change your mind. Shannon always liked the idea of marriage, but didn’t pressure Gene about it. After 28 years of un-wedded bliss, however, Gene finally conquered his self-proclaimed fear of commitment, admitting it was “time for him to grow up." At 62 he popped the question in July of 2011 and has never looked back.

Despite times a tad turbulent, the two have provenly stuck through it all and raised two rad kids in the process!

Picture
Rachel Zoe & Rodger Berman
One of fashion’s most adorable couples (in my humble opinion), the stylist/designer/The Zoe Report media empress and her right-hand business partner/president of it all make a stunningly powerful duo.

The two met in the early ‘90s working their respective restaurant grinds while attending college in Washington, D.C. They sealed the marriage deal after seven years of dating and have since had two strikingly blue-eyed babes, but the couple’s most defining trait is the extent of genuine interest and involvement shared regarding each other’s ventures.

Before Rachel Zoe was “Rachel Zoe,” Rodger was an investment banker and new media mogul himself. As President of Rachel Zoe Inc. he now clearly uses his skillful perspective to play a reassuring role in the company’s financial, legal and overall branding presence. In a charming 2011 column for Harper’s Bazaar, he dished several confessions regarding life in the industry hubbub. From having “no predisposition to fashion,” to finding secret comfort in the glamorous chaos, the sheer affinity he expresses toward his life reimagined is the exceptionally sweet article’s best feature.

Plus, it’s good an excessive wardrobe didn’t initially scare dear Rodger away. If that doesn’t speak to a man’s devotion, then I don’t know what does.

Picture
Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo
Another tag-team of utter rock-n-roll royalty, the timelessly edgy troubadour and insanely talented musician extraordinaire have written slews of hit songs and a love story to match.

Some sagas make a pretty convincing case for cosmic forces at times afoot—Pat & Neil’s included. At the late-1970s forefront of her budding musical career, Pat signed with Chrysalis Records…who proceeded to immediately fire almost everyone in the band. A mistakenly drastic move one might say, had one replacement guitarist nicknamed “Spyder” not shortly come along.

Four Grammys, several multi-platinum albums, a seemingly endless string of chart-smashing singles, two daughters and almost 40 years later, the couple has just as strong and creative a bond as ever. Citing groundedness as key to the relationship’s great success, Pat maintains that having met as “regular people” constructs the fierce foundation for their nearly 34-year marriage.

An interesting tale of inception accompanying lasting musical legacy, Pat & Neil compose an ongoingly pivotal power of iconic voice as well as vision.

So here’s to these inspiring couples, and Happy Valentine’s Day to all in advance! Regardless of who you do or don't spend it with, may it be filled with love for self as well as others.

Full Moon in Leo & Other Celestial Spectacles

1/23/2016

The stars have aligned…well, planets at least. Five to be exact!

Today’s full moon in Leo surrounds a rare cosmic display of enigmatic events. The “fab five” of space-aged characters Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter have formed a visible line in the night sky for the first time in more than a decade.

Retrograding like a rat, mischievous Mercury is also at it again, which means some pretty intense energy is upon us.

As the planet of communication provokes periods of potential blunder as well as wonder, many messages will come to light; however, beware where the mind may travel. Determination and focus is one thing, but don’t let psychological obsession get the best of you.

Truth is truth—a funny thing, and a concept that comes in many forms:
        as it is
        as it once was
as we wish it to be
and as it could become in the future

While each can be valid at one point or another, it totally depends on the situational stage. Beauty may lie in the eye of the beholder, but reality does not. Despite it hard for some to grasp, effective management of the present requires identifying and separating which truth-filled flavors are applicable, not just alluring.

So channel your inner Leo lion to help prioritize and power through the universe’s ceaselessly mysterious ways.

Lunar love to all!

Essence Over Ego: Here’s to a Sparkling New Year

1/2/2016

With a fresh year comes a fresh start—what else is new?

Oaths to healthier eating, increased savings or simply doing more for others may comprise the endless slew of social media-pronounced resolutions annually plaguing web ways come January 1, but there’s more to meet the inaugurating eye than cliche e-vows alone.

As the top trending fashion & beauty questions via Google (with accompanying answers per our beloved The Zoe Report), the most notable band breakups and other flavors of 'year in review’ posts continue circulating the Internet, 2015 leaves us with additionally deeper themes to reflect upon as 2016 arrives.

Survive and thrive: a year in summarized saga

December signified an end of transition, with January now kickstarting the series of next pivotal steps forward.

A la Mystic Mamma, our monthly motif boils down to resetting. Manifesting unconscious thoughts into cognizant action, we must pull emotional weeds from the past to rid what no longer serves us. Steve and his Apple empire can dream, but our energetic capacity doesn’t work quite like the Cloud. We’re not equipped with seemingly unlimited soul space sketchily stored in shared sky servers, so it’s our responsibility to make room for higher vibes, heartwarming experiences and everything else 2016 has to offer.
Picture

It’s always stunning to think how someone’s best year is another one’s worst, but rather than where you’ve been, it’s where you’re heading that matters most.

Despite its bad rap, feeling lost often comes with the territory of personal growth. If you can handle a hearty dose of dark (to say the least) humor, macabre maven of the comic world Johnny C. pretty well captures the sentiment. As we all strive to find our sometimes misunderstood course in this crazily conflicting world, overcoming the physical, emotional and existential obstacles reveal who we are and our paths meant-to-be.

Carving one’s way requires defying the laws of comfort. Logically pushing the edge and taking certain strategic risks can be the breakthrough portal to turning a whirlwind of previously verging potential into reality at last.

Always a must are truth and trust as we dive into this dazzling new year ahead, so make it a point to stay out of your own way when it’s hindering things that can so excellently be.
Happy new year! May it be the most sparkling one yet.

Home for the Holidays...In More Ways Than One: Full Moon in Cancer

12/25/2015

As the holiday hot mess begins coming to a close, we find ourselves at yet another luminous lunar stage.

At the heart of today’s full moon in Cancer is the interestingly posed notion of coming home to your true self.

Bringing emotional swarms to the forefront and floods of feelings through which to cipher, typical full moon antics are alive and well. Picking up Cancerous sensations of self-exploration, now is the time for some deep diving into seas of subconsciousness.
Picture
"We’re being pulled to a place where only karmic memory can remind us of our next move,"
as our beloved astro experts at The Numinous so excellently put it.

Amidst the mystical mix of past lives and karma, what may not be now but perhaps once was can be your guiding light toward crafting the greatest senses of belonging. Per cosmic ushe, things resonate for a reason, so channeling inspiration from heart-sparking people, places and ideas you come across is especially critical.

A perfect embodiment of this full moon’s forces at work is “The Hermit” from Kim Krans’ notorious The Wild Unknown tarot deck.

One must ultimately find comfort in creating your own home to wear on your back—a bit of a reflective revelation I had a few months ago after stumbling upon a tarot-inspired fashion series fabulous fellow lifestyle blogger Gabriela posted on her spiritual e-domain Breathing Fashion.

We all have a path with much to learn along the way, so embracing The Hermit-esque approach to finding strength through internal struggle is an ultimate toast to the complex course of self discovery.

I’ve apparently taken my 28-year-old African Desert tortoise cousin for granted; who knew they were so existentially wise?
